This trip takes intrepid adventures to the Chicago Basin, located deep in the Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. The basin sits amidst 8 peaks over 13,000 feet and 4 peaks over 14,000 feet. After a 2-hour ride on the narrow gauge Durango to Silverton train, we hike 6.5 miles along Needle creek to get to the basin. This is our "base camp" from which we climb as many of the surrounding peaks as we have the energy to summit! The San Juan mountains are quite rugged and the 14'ers in this area are challenging! If a remote climbing and backpacking adventure with train rides sounds like fun to you, then this trip is for you!
This southern California adventure will take you on the wild side as we explore pristine wilderness areas as well as push ourselves on one of the most challenging hikes in North America--The Cactus to Clouds Trail from Palm Springs up San Jacinto Peak has the continuous greatest elevation gain of any trail in the United States. Also known as the Skyline Trail, it climbs 10,800 feet in approximately 16 miles. The good news is that we will take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway most of the way down the mountain!
This Escalante lodge-based hiking tour is an exciting and diverse journey into the classic landscapes of the West. You will experience the intricacies of this secluded and diverse landscape. Each day is completely different as we set out on exciting hikes and adventures into breathtaking Canyon Country. Waterfalls, Slickrock, deep canyons, natural arches, and bridges, relics of the Native Americans and pioneers who once called this land home, and endless views make this adventure one of the most enchanting on the planet!
Teddy Roosevelt called the Superstition Mountains "the Swiss Alps of the Sonoran Desert” and when we ascend into this magnificent wilderness area you will immediately see why. Soaring, jagged peaks are blanketed with towering Saguaro cactus; boulder-filled canyons crisscross the landscape to create a maze in which hundreds of unprepared explorers have lost their way; seasonal washes and life-sustaining springs give rise to lush vegetation and critter-rich riparian oasis’s. We will be traveling trails that were once the home of Native American tribes who fiercely defended this area against the conquest of Spanish explorers. If we listen closely, we might hear their whispers in the wind.

Traverse the "Big Ditch" on the shortest night of the year. After driving to and exploring the north rim, we hit the trail at approximately 6 pm on the shortest night of the year—the first day of summer. We descend with the setting sun, cross under the cover of the stars and moonlit darkness and climb out with the rising sun. This hike descends on the North Kaibab trail for 14.3 miles and approximately 5,800 feet to Phantom Ranch. We will then climb out of the canyon via the Bright Angel trail for nearly 10 miles and 4,500 feet of elevation gain. If you are afraid of the dark, then you should sit this one out!
